The Boston Red Sox started the second half of their season on a very positive note. The Red Sox claimed two out of three in what looked like a tricky road series. The Red Sox defeated the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, 11-5 to claim the series. Prior to the All-Star break, the Red Sox had won eight of nine games. With the road-series win over the Cubs, Boston has kept some momentum as they look forward to an easy part of their schedule.

The Red Sox do have a favorable schedule coming up. They will face the Oakland Athletics in their next series before hosting the New York Mets. These are both teams that have underachieved so far this season. Boston will be keen to win both series before a two-game set against the Atlanta Braves. The following chart shows that Boston has been making some serious gains for a little more than a month.

Cy Young Candidates: Updates

For those paying attention to Cy Young candidates, several of the favorites to win in either the NL or AL were in action this weekend. Framber Valdez, who remains the favorite in the American League, had a bad outing on Saturday. He yielded five earned runs before being pulled in the 7th. After the game, the Houston Astros listed him as day-to-day. Accordingly, bet365 lengthened his betting offs to win the AL’s Cy Young from +200 to +250.

Shane McClanahan of the Tampa Bay Rays is still in the mix for the same award. The lefty is slated to start against the Texas Rangers on Monday. McClanahan is the fourth favorite to win the AL’s Cy Young (source: bet365) at odds of +600. He has an 11-1 record and an ERA of 2.53 as he returns from the injured list. The game against Texas is one that is worth watching. MLB fans will want to see if McClanahan has his best stuff immediately off of the DL. Furthermore, Texas just completed a sweep: will they win against an ace pitcher on Monday?

In the National League, Spencer Strider took a loss on Saturday. He fell to 11-3 on the season behind a five-run performance. Strider remains at +240 to win the NL’s Cy Young. That makes him the co-favorite with Zac Gallen, who also lost over the weekend.

The New York Yankees are starting to look like they are in trouble. The team is in last place in the AL East standings. The Rays are out of reach for the near future with a nine-game lead. However, New York’s chances of coming back in the division are far-fetched due to the fact that they are chasing all four teams. Even Boston beats New York on tiebreakers right now.

Accordingly, the Yankees are actually on the outside and looking in when it comes to the Wild Card Race. Besides the AL East beasts, the Yankees have to worry about the second-placed teams in the AL Central and the AL West. Following Sunday, the Astros were higher in the Wild Card standings than New York.

Will the Yankees make a deal to help with a playoff push soon? The MLB trade deadline is August 1st, 2023.
