New England Patriots: Will Use the Game for Inexperienced Players
NFL head coaches generally do not contest the results of preseason games with any kind of energy. What drives the action is that the players are trying to make a good impression. Many of them need to avoid getting cut. Others that are likely to make the team try to show that they deserve playing time.
Head coach Bill Belichick has announced that it’s the players deep in the depth chart that “will get the most playing time,” (Belichick qtd. in NESN article/August 8th). That, in turn, does cast some doubt on whether or not the Patriots will win the game.
Will NFL Fans See Much of CJ Stroud?
The game carries some possible historical significance. C.J. Stroud is thought to be a quarterback with a future in the NFL. But it’s never really clear just how much playing time players can expect. “The Houston Texans are hoping C.J. Stroud will eventually lead the franchise to prominence, and he’ll face his first live game action Thursday night in his preseason debut versus the New England Patriots” (NBCsportsboston.com/August 8th, 2023).
One factor that favors the outcome going the way of the Patriots is the experience of the coaches. This is a game between the best coach in the NFL, Belichick, and a head-coaching debutant. DeMeco Ryans, the new coach of the Texans, has never had to prepare an entire team before. Meanwhile, Belichick has done that many times.
Those that are thinking of backing New England, should go with the handicap of +3.5 (-110). The deep players on the Patriots should be better than Houston’s deep roster. You just have to think that, given the direction of the two franchises in recent seasons. Our recommendation is to take the points on the Patriots.
