Carolina vs New York prediction for Week 2 of the NFL preseason (August 18th, 2023). We’re skeptical of the Panthers.
The Carolina Panthers and the New York Giants are each 0-1 in the 2023 NFL preseason. The two teams will meet on Friday, August 18th, 2023. New York, the team that is favored to win, will host the game which takes place as part of Week 2 of the NFL preseason. Our Carolina vs New York prediction is that the Giants will be the team that emerges victorious in this contest.
Carolina Panthers: Shut Out in Week 1
The Carolina Panthers were the only NFL team that suffered a shutout loss in Week 1 of the preseason. That is something that could be overreacted to. However, in this case, NFL bettors have to assume that the team’s reputation precedes them. Carolina was really bad last season and they have not had it together for quite some time now.
This season could be a bit different for Carolina. The Panthers have a new offensive coordinator. Thomas Brown was the Assistant Head Coach and Running Backs Coach for the Los Angeles Rams in 2021/22. That was the season that the Rams won the Super Bowl. It’s very common for lower-ranked coaches to get better jobs in the seasons that follow a Super Bowl victory. We’ll see how things work out for Brown but taking the only shutout loss in the opening week of the preseason is not a promising start.
The headlines on the Carolina Panthers’ website suggest that the offensive line is taking the blame. Darin Gantt, a writer with the website, headlined “Offensive line has impromptu meeting after disappointing day” (August 12th, 2023). It could be that something better comes out of Carolina this upcoming week. However, it’s more likely that their problems are so pervasive that a simple “impromptu meeting” does little to change things.
Then, there is Frank Reich to think about. He is 40-33 as a Head Coach in the NFL. But what did we see last season in Indianapolis? It was a letdown season for sure for the Colt and Reich ended up fired.
Panthers vs Giants Prediction: Final Thoughts
The Giants seem to be the clear favorites for this upcoming game. They have consistently shown a higher level of skill and refinement in their gameplay over the past few seasons. Even in the preseason, their second and third-string quarterbacks were able to score 16 points on the road against Detroit. It’s important to keep expectations in check for this game, as it’s unlikely to be a flashy affair. However, if you’re looking for the safest bet, putting your money on New York to win outright with a moneyline of -160 seems like the smart choice.
