The Los Angeles Angels will meet the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday, July 29th. The game is perceived as fairly even when one looks at the betting odds. The Angels enter as mild underdogs at +110 while Toronto is -130 on the money line. Our Angels vs Jays prediction will be focusing on the pitching matchup for this game.

But firstly, there is a situation to watch for bettors. Shohei Ohtani was removed from Friday’s game against the Blue Jays due to cramping (Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reported). If you want to check his playing status for Saturday, then it’s available at the following link: Ohtani’s player profile at ESPN. As of very early Saturday morning, he was day-to-day but injury statuses change on a regular basis. His health status does affect LA’s chances in the game as he is the biggest offensive threat for either team.

Angels vs Jays: Starting Pitching

The Angels will be sending a left-hander to the mound in Reid Detmers. He is 2-7 with a 4.38 ERA. He has a WHIP of 1.30 and gets quite a lot of strikeouts. At first glance, you might expect a more balanced win-loss record based on his stats. He is having a bad month in July with a 6.64 ERA.

The Jays will be sending the much-discussed Alek Manaoh to the mound. The right-hander has stats that would suggest he belongs in the minor leagues. He is 2-8 with a 6.10 ERA and a WHIP of 1.80. But the Jays are stuck with him, partly because of his upside. He was excellent last season and if he rediscovers his best pitching, he could rattle off a lot of wins, keeping in mind there’s still time for about 13 starts this season for a pitcher in the regular rotation.

Angels vs Jays prediction: OVER 9.5 Runs

Manaoh has gotten in trouble in most of his starts at home recently. San Diego chased him after three innings earlier this month. Manoah pitched, get this, 0.1 innings against Houston in June, an outing where he gave up six earned runs. He lasted four innings against the Brew Crew in May. Against Baltimore and NYY in mid-May, Manoah gave up 7 earned runs combined in 9.2 innings of work in the two games. All these games were played in Toronto, the site of Saturday’s game.

Toronto is known for having a hitter-friendly ballpark. With the pitching situation, the OVER for total runs looks like a very plausible bet. It’s set at 9.5 with EVEN odds on the OVER side. You would want Ohtani to play if you take the OVER. But even without him, it’s reasonable enough to expect that Manaoh gives up a good share of the 10 runs you need in the game before getting pulled. Game time is at 3:07 PM ET (12:07 PM PT).
