Major League Baseball is into the All-Star break, meaning that teams have played about 90 games over their 162-game regular seasons. Here’s a look at the MLB betting favorites in several ante-post/futures markets with Unibet sportsbook.
The Atlanta Braves: 2023 World Series favorites
The Atlanta Braves head into the break following a loss on Sunday. However, they defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in their series, two games to one. The Braves, the World Series champions from two seasons ago, are the betting favorites to win the World Series this season. They are priced at +350 (all odds Unibet). Here’s a look at Atlanta’s season overall and how they have done in recent weeks. The latter gives sports fans an idea of their momentum.
Atlanta Braves MLB Betting Favorites: Recent Form Alert
- Formerly: 33 – 24 on June 3rd, 2023
- Currently: 60 – 29 (overall)
- Recent form: 27 – 5 since June 3rd, 2023
- Recent winning rate: .844
As the chart above shows, the Braves have been absolutely unstoppable as far as Major League Baseball standards go. A winning percentage of .844 is rarely upheld over a period of five weeks. However, Atlanta has managed that. You could argue that the break comes at a very bad time for the Braves. Yet, they have plenty of margin for error in their division should they blink for a moment or two after the break.
Since the Braves are World Series favorites, one would expect them to be the favorites to win their division, the NL East, and their conference, the National League. They are, in fact, set at +160 for the NL title and an untouchable -10000 to win the NL East.
The Tampa Bay Rays: American League favorites
The Tampa Bay Rays are +220 to win the American League. In the midst of a slump, their status as favorites could be viewed as enigmatic. However, this is probably a team that took in a lot of bets early in the season.
Baseball fans will remember the 13-game winning streak that TB started the season with. They have certainly regressed since that time, in fact, their regression has been enough to call into question their status as AL favorites. The chart below shows that the Rays have played just .350 baseball since June 17th, 2023.
Tampa Bay Rays MLB Betting Favorites: Recent Form Alert
- Formerly: 51 – 22 on June 17th, 2023
- Currently: 58 – 35 (overall)
- Recent form: 7 – 13 since June 17th, 2023
- Recent winning rate: .350
The Rays are also the favorites in the AL East at -375 with Unibet. However, Baltimore is nipping at the Rays’ heels.
Other American League Divisional Favorites
The betting favorites in the AL Central remain the Minnesota Twins. However, the Cleveland Guardians may overtake that market soon. They are -150 and +120 respectively.
In the AL West, the struggling Texas Rangers are -129 favorites to win the division. However, the EVEN odds on Houston look more agreeable to the value bettors with the long-shot Seattle Mariners at +2000 not out of the question.
National League Divisional Favorites
As mentioned, the Atlanta Braves are -10000 to win the NL East (ie. they are 1 to 100). The Milwaukee Brewers are the favorites for the NL Central division at EVEN odds but the Cincinnati Reds might just overtake this market. They are set at +125 as the second favorite.
The LA Dodgers are heavy favorites to win the NL West at -305 against their competitors. The Arizona Diamondbacks are a team in regression heading into the All-Star break. They are out at +400 now as the division’s second favorite. Meanwhile, afterthoughts for a title winner would fall on San Francisco, who is currently +700.
Betting Odds: Player Markets for MVP
Shohei Ohtani is going to win the MVP right? There’s something about being the home-run leader and a solid starting pitcher that suggests as much. The sportsbooks are very guarded against bets on Ohtani with Unibet pricing him at -1250, meaning a 25-unit bet would return just 27 units for a 2-unit profit on a winner.
The problem with heavy favorites is two-fold: if you win, you don’t win much. If you pound it hard to jiggle as much pocket change as possible out of the line, you will start sweating bullets if Ohtani ends up on the injury reserve before locking in the numbers he needs for the MVP Award. This is a market that looks untouchable.
The NL MVP favorite is Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Atlanta Braves. He is priced a shorter-than-EVEN odds as well at -400.
Player Markets: Cy Young favorites
The top pick for the American League Cy Young is Framber Valdez of the Houston Astros. Unibet has him at +215 against the field. Valdez enters the break with a record of 7-6, a WHIP of 1.05, and an ERA of 2.51. This is a market that we’ll look at shortly as it appears as though Valdez is overrated as the betting favorite. Specifically, we’ll look at how much of an impression his record will have on earning him votes.
The pick for the National League CY Young is Zac Gallen, who is priced at +125. Gallen enters the break with an 11-3 record and a WHIP of 1.05. If he keeps that up, then he will make a good impression on the voters for the award. However, an ERA of 3.05 is a little bit high for a Cy Young favorite so this is a market worth looking at as well.
The AL’s Rookie of the Year favorite is Josh Jung of the Texas Rangers. The third baseman has a .280 average with 19 home runs. Meanwhile, the NL’s Rookie of the Year favorite is Corbin Carroll, who is a heavy favorite at -500. Corbin plays left field for the Arizona Diamondbacks and has batted .289 this season with 18 home runs.
