The Chicago Cubs took three out of four off of the St. Louis Cardinals. In doing so, Chicago climbed to 48-51 on the season. This record, though still a losing record, represents a significant turnaround in recent weeks. With 63 games remaining, there is still time for Chicago to get into the Wild Card picture — provided that they stay sharp.

From their less-than-impressive record of 26 – 36 on June 9th, 2023, they have managed to improve their overall standing to their current record. In their last 37 games, the Cubs have secured 22 wins and only suffered 15 losses. Looking at this range of games in isolation, their winning rate is .595. That is a very good winning rate that, if maintained, might see them on the bubble for an NL Wild Card.

Chicago Cubs: Recent Form Alert

  • Formerly: 26 – 36 on June 9th, 2023
  • Currently: 48 – 51 (overall)
  • Recent form: 22 – 15 since June 9th, 2023
  • Recent winning rate: .595

Currently, the NL Wild Card standings see the Cincinnati Reds on top. The Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants are the No. 2 and No. 3 Wild Cards. It’s these two teams that might slide down. Arizona has lost four straight and they’ve been cold for a few weeks now. Meanwhile, San Francisco just hit a bad patch out of nowhere, losing five straight.

Complicating things for Chicago right now is the fact that they have the Miami Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies to overtake as well. Basically, Chicago needs to overtake three of the teams ahead of them — all while keeping those behind them at bay. It will likely take a stellar winning rate for Chicago to do that.

For betting odds, the Cubs are out at 33 to 4 to make the NL playoffs this season (bet365 futures; +825). They do warrant backing provided you accept the following:

  • a .595 winning percentage over their most recent 37 games can’t just be called a short-term blip; they appear to have improved
  • they aren’t going to offload talent at the trade deadline
  • some of the other teams ahead of them are likely to drop, like Arizona, Miami, and maybe San Francisco

Our recommendation is to keep an eye on Chicago at this point. They need some more wins and some good trade headlines to really feel confident in them right now. Some of the opinions out there on the Cubs would suggest that they are playing for next season. However, they are one of the NL teams still very much alive at this point in this season.
